How to Use a Derma Roller, Step by Step

Derma rollers are only a safe and effective tool if you take the time to learn the required steps to use it correctly. We will guide you to the preparation phase, rolling phase and post-treatment phase.

Preparation

1. Disinfect your roller

Before you start, make sure to disinfect your roller first by letting it soak in alcohol (available at your local pharmacy store) for around 5-10 minutes.

2. Wash your hands and face

Wash your hands thoroughly with water and soap. Then, clean your skin with a gentle pH-balanced cleanser.

If you are known to be particularly sensitive to pain, consider a numbing cream after washing your face. This will be absolutely necessary if you are using longer needles.

3. Start Rolling

Roll 10 ties horizontally and vertically at the same intensity. Then roll 10 times diagonally in the same area using the same intensity. On the nose, you work downward. Do not force the roller onto your skin, make sure to apply only mild pressure.

While rolling, you may feel a bit of an uncomfortable or prickling sensation. This is your body sending signals to your brain that you want to regenerate that area. This is normal and may last a bit after treatment as well. The pain level will depend on how much pressure you use on the roller and how thick the needles are. If you have sensitive skin, you can consider applying numbing cream before treatment.

What to Expect Right After Treatment?

After rolling, the area can become red and this is to be expected as your skin can lose moisture as you are derma rolling. The redness should completely clear within the next 24 hours.

Temporary redness, dryness and irritation are common after treatment especially with more frequent use and bigger needle sizes. For this reason, it is important to keep hydrated and to moisturize your skin. Try using soothing, natural products since tiny little micro pathways have been created in your skin from dermarolling and your skin can absorb your products even more effectively, which is great if used with the right products. Avoid serum/creams with pore clogging, irritating or harmful ingredients.

Post-Treatment Reminders

  • Always remember to disinfect your roller before storing it away.
  • Wear sun protection if you are outside for more than 2 hours.
  • Avoid sharing your roller with friends or family to avoid cross-contamination.

Note: Be sure to choose the correct size roller to ensure you get the best possible results.

How Often Should I Use It?

Frequency of use varies depending on the size of the microneedle. The smaller the needle, the more often you are able to do the treatment.

0.20 - 0.30mm: Can be used on daily or every second day on the same skin area.

0.5mm: Can be used weekly on the same skin area.

0.75-1.00mm: Can be used every 4-6 weeks

1.5mm: Can be used once every 6-8 weeks on the same skin area.

2.0-3.0mm: Can only be used once every 8 weeks on the same skin area.

Note: For 2.0+ mm long needles, it's recommended to use in thicker areas of the skin like thighs, back, butt, feet, arms or back of hands, rather than on the face. Professional supervision is also highly suggested for use of thicker needles.

Precautions

Dermarolling can be amazing and create fantastic results, however we advise against rolling if you have active acne, eczema, cold sores, psoriasis, or sunburn. Please wait for those symptoms to go away before you start rolling. It is also best to avoid dermarolling if you are taking any health medications that may interfere with your treatment, such as anti-depressants, antibiotics, high blood pressure drugs, drugs that cause photo-sensitivity and other drugs that have skin side-effects.

Depending on the size of your roller, you may or may not experience any bleeding during treatment. If you do see blood during treatment, don't panic! Just wash your face once treatment is done to remove all traces of blood. You will notice a few tiny red spots which will disappear after 24 hours.

Be careful not to roll over the recommended time as it can cause increased recovery time, prolonged redness, and swelling.

Where to Buy?

There are many derma rollers out there in the market, and it is important to choose your roller wisely as a low quality roller can do more harm than good to your skin.

Low quality rollers result in more painful treatment with unsatisfactory results. The needles bent and rust easily which can result in more skin damage and infections. Meanwhile, high quality derma rollers can produce skin improvements in just several treatments. Most people see 60-80% improvement on their fine lines, wrinkles, scars and even stretch marks within 6 to 12 months with a quality roller and proper treatment plan.

DermRollers is considered one of Australia's top at-home derma rollers for your skin and has been extremely successful in significantly improving the appearance of the skin and can be used for a variety of skin concerns. Whether it is minimizing the appearance of scars, smoothing out fine lines and stretch marks, massaging serums deeper into the skin or stimulating hair growth on the scalp, DermRollers can do it all.

The current 2022 model is available in 10 different needle sizes, allowing users to customize their skincare experience and choose a specific needle length according to their personal needs. The roller is made with 540 titanium microneedles, which are stronger and more effective than stainless steel. It is also more durable, comfortable to hold and more simple to clean than other dermarollers in the market.
